England - Dover to London

The Bank of England was founded as a private bank in 1694 to act as banker to the Government. Before 1725, banknotes were hand written for a specific amount until the Bank Charter Act of 1844 gave the Bank of England a range of new powers including issuing banknotes. It didn't become an independent public organisation until 1998 and is now UKs central bank.
